TikTok, the popular social media platform, has found itself in hot water in the United Kingdom over allegations that it's operating as an unlicensed cryptocurrency exchange. A former compliance consultant for a cryptocurrency platform has sent a letter to the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), expressing concerns about TikTok's handling of virtual currency.

1. The letter highlights that TikTok's virtual currency, TikTok Coins, which users buy to send gifts to content creators, can be converted into "diamonds" and eventually into fiat currency. This process, the consultant argues, essentially makes TikTok a platform for bartering crypto assets for cash without the necessary FCA registration.

2. The consultant's letter urges the FCA to regulate TikTok under anti-money laundering (AML) and terrorist financing laws, given the platform's structure that allows for monetary transfers that could potentially bypass rules and regulations. The letter also points out that TikTok's current AML measures may not be adequate, leaving it exposed to money laundering and other fraudulent activities.

3. The FCA, which oversees financial companies in the UK to ensure compliance with laws aimed at preventing money laundering and terrorist financing, is now facing pressure to scrutinize TikTok's financial transactions, especially those involving virtual currency. In response, TikTok is reportedly beefing up its compliance team to address these issues.

The situation has also caught the attention of global regulators. In Australia, the Australian Transaction Report and Analysis Centre (AUSTRAC) is investigating TikTok for suspected involvement in money laundering. The platform has also faced bans and legal challenges in countries like the United States, due to concerns over user privacy and data protection. Despite these controversies, some politicians have defended TikTok against bans.

In a related development, Italy fined three TikTok units for failing to adequately check content that could be harmful to children or other vulnerable groups. Amidst these challenges, TikTok is reportedly considering cutting its workforce by hundreds of employees.
